RESPONSIBLE FOR: MUSEUM PROGRAMS – CURATORIAL, RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT WITH COLLECTORS AND COLLECTING INSTITUTIONS, COLLECTION RESEARCH, LECTURES AND SEMINARS.
REPORTING STAFF: CURATORIAL STAFF, LIBRARIAN.
EFFECTIVE FROM: March 2013
RENUMERATION: $HK by negotiation.
The HKMM is an independent, not for Profit Company responsible for the collection, documentation and presentation of maritime material culture associated with Hong Kong, the South China Sea, the Pearl River Delta and historic China.
Working in partnership with the Hong Kong Government and members the Hong Kong Ship Owners Association, the HKMM is developing an international standard maritime museum and research centre at Pier 8 for opening in February 2013.
The purpose of the position is to support the Museum Director and the Board in implementing international best practice at HKMM in the areas of curatorship, collection development and research. A secondary function is to assist the HKMM engage with Mainland Chinese and South East Asian maritime museums and other scholarly institutions through mutually beneficial professional activities, travelling exhibitions and cultural exchanges.
In consultation with the Museum Director, direct and support the museums daily curatorial programs with specific reference to collection documentation, conservation and presentation associated with the Pier 8 development.
Maintain and develop professional links with individuals and collecting institutions relevant to the acquisition policies of the museum.
Develop and manage an active Hong Kong and travelling exhibition program that includes both HKMM curated exhibitions and loan material from international museums.
Undertake collection research in areas relevant to the HKMM public programs and supervise research initiatives undertaken by junior staff and students.
Provide an internal editorial service for all Past Perfect records in association with the HKMM Librarian and senior Assistant Curator.
Initiate and support partnerships with Mainland Chinese, South East Asian maritime museums and other scholarly institutions that support the emergence of HKMM as the premier facility of its kind on the South China Coast.
Lead and support personnel development initiatives designed to build staff museum skills
- Contribute to a museum publication program utilizing the HKMM collections and the resources of the CSSC Museum Resource Centre.
The HKMM Senior Curator is accountable for
Development and maintenance of international standard practice in curatorial and public programing. through standard setting, staff development and supervision
Maintenance of positive day to day relationships with all stakeholders who interact with HKMM in the areas of curatorship and public programing.
Establishment and Maintenance of positive day to day relations with collectors and donors (many Chinese speaking)
- Scholarly research associated with the museum’s collection
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
This is an important position of trust within HKMM and requires the position holder to interact positively with the Museum Director and HKMM stakeholders on a day to day basis.
The successful applicant will possess appropriate academic qualifications to a postgraduate level and have worked in a similar position for at least five years. Very high language competence in both written and spoken English and Chinese (Cantonese /or Putonghua) is essential. Good knowledge of Chinese history is also required. Knowledge of maritime history is not essential but helpful.
The Senior Curators performance will be reviewed annually by the Museum Director of the HKKM
