Post-Doctoral Lecturer Positions 2013-14
Freshman Residential Programs in the Arts and History of Science
Science in the Making Integrated Learning Environment (SIMILE)
Stanford University’s Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) seeks to fill a post-doctoral lecturer positions in one of two new pilot programs that will integrate year-long liberal education courses with residentially-based learning opportunities for freshmen in a living/learning community.
Science in the Making Integrated Learning Environment (SIMILE) will provide students with an intellectually intense opportunity to read, discuss and debate some of the great scientific and technical writers from antiquity to the present while also introducing them to a variety of current approaches to the history of science, medicine, and technology. The goal of SIMILE is to introduce students to history as a field of knowledge from which to investigate broadly the evolution of our understanding of the natural world and the creation of a human-made world. This program will give beginning college students an appreciation for how history sheds light on the world around us, and for how studying science, technology, and medicine from this perspective is an important window into the past.
Working closely with the teaching team of Stanford faculty and two additional lecturers, the SIMILE post-doctoral lecturer will lead two discussion sections of 15 students per quarter and offer individualized instruction to their students. Along with the teaching team, the lecturer will introduce students to history as a field of knowledge from which to investigate broadly the evolution of our understanding of the natural world and the creation of a human-made world.
The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of distinction in relevant scholarship and research and hold a Ph.D. in History with an emphasis on history and/or philosophy of science, technology, or medicine, and/or related areas such as the philosophy of science or intellectual, cultural, or environmental history.
TO APPLY for the post-doctoral lecturer position, follow the instructions on this website: https://www.stanford.edu/dept/undergrad/cgi-bin/drupal/tm_simile_lec_app .
Applications will open February 4th, 2013 and close March 18th, 2013 (11:59:59 Eastern Time) and must be submitted through Interfolio. All offers of employment are contingent upon the candidate being able to demonstrate eligibility to work in the U.S.
Stanford University is an Equal Opportunity employer committed to diversity of staff.
