Lecturer Position for the
Science in the Making Integrated Learning Environment (SIMILE)
Residential First-year Program
The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) at Stanford University is now accepting applications for a Lecturer in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR) to teach in a new residential program for freshmen, the Science in the Making Integrated Learning Environment (SIMILE). We are seeking applicants who combine a commitment to teaching writing to first-year undergraduates with a strong disciplinary background in the history of science, technology, and medicine.
This year-long, residentially-based academic program will provide students with an intellectually intense opportunity to read, discuss, and debate some of the great scientific and technical writers from antiquity to the present while also introducing them to a variety of current approaches to the history of science, medicine, and technology. It will provide them with a focused educational experience at the beginning of college in which to observe how knowledge evolves and changes across time and space; the role of texts, images, and objects in the making of knowledge; and the process by which each generation responds to the preoccupations, beliefs, and conclusions of earlier generations.
We are seeking a Lecturer to teach one 15-student writing section per quarter in the SIMILE three-quarter sequence, lead writing workshops for the teaching team to shape the writing curriculum, and offer individualized and group writing and revision assistance to the SIMILE students. The Lecturer is expected to attend the SIMILE lectures to ensure a strong bond between the content-based and writing-focused components of the program.
Initial appointments of lecturers will be for a term of at least one year beginning in the 2013-2014 academic year, with a start date of September 1, 2013. The appointment may be renewable contingent on satisfactory performance and programmatic need. Salary will be in the range of $56,000-$60,000.
Qualifications: Candidates should hold a PhD in history and preferably have experience in the history of science, technology, and medicine and/or related areas such as the philosophy of science or intellectual, cultural, or environmental history. Demonstrated ability in teaching, writing, and the teaching of writing is required.
Please include a letter of application (outlining your experience and interests in the teaching of writing, the field of rhetoric and composition, and the field of the history of science), curriculum vitae, three letters of reference, a teaching philosophy statement, and a writing sample consisting of an article or a chapter from your dissertation which includes discussion of material relevant to SIMILE’s program.
Applications must be submitted through Interfolio at http://apptrkr.com/315019. For full consideration of an application, all required materials must be uploaded to Interfolio by 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time on February 25, 2013. If you have questions about the position, please write to Professor Paula Findlen (email@example.com).
All offers of employment are made contingent upon the candidate being able to demonstrate eligibility to work in the US.
