Assistant Professor, Africana Studies/Expressive Cultures
The Program in Africana Studies and several departments at Lehigh University seek applications
for a tenure-track position in Expressive Cultures with a focus on the cultures of Africa, the
Caribbean and/or the African Diaspora, especially in art history, the visual arts, design or theater.
The position will be at the Assistant Professor rank and will begin in the fall of 2013.
The prospective hire will have a 2/2 teaching load and will hold a joint appointment in Africana
Studies and one of two Expressive Cultures departments: The Department of Theater or the
Department of Art, Architecture and Design. In addition to participating in the instruction and
advising of undergraduate students in his or her respective field, the candidate will be expected
to contribute to the vibrant community and intellectual life of the Africana Studies Program.
Applicants from a wide-range of fields and with a stated interdisciplinary expertise are
welcomed. The program is particularly interested in someone who is creatively engaged
in Expressive Cultures, and whose research and teaching intersect with Gender Studies.
The position is a part of a cluster hire in the Africana Studies Program, marking Lehigh
University’s institutional investment in the program. In addition to 14 program-linked faculty
currently working across a range of disciplines, added hires in the cluster will provide the
Africana Studies Program with six full-time joint-appointment faculty, bringing to fruition
Africana Studies’ quest to become a vital interdisciplinary program at the center of the
College of Arts and Sciences and the University’s educational mission.

(ASA) conference in Philadelphia, and the conference of the College Art Association (CAA)
in New York. Questions concerning the position should be directed to James Peterson, Search
