Thurgood Marshall College at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The Dimensions of Culture Program (DOC) is an introductory three-quarter social science/humanities core curriculum sequence that is required of all first-year students at Thurgood Marshall College at UCSD. Successful completion of the lower-division DOC sequence (1, 2, and 3) satisfies the University of California writing requirement and the UCSD diversity requirement.
The Fall Quarter course, DOC 1: Diversity is designed to provide a broad overview of the histories of multiple communities and to explore the origins of social stratification in the United States. The Winter Quarter course, DOC 2: Justice, explores tensions between the founding American promise of "equality for all" and its imperfect realization in various institutional settings. The Spring Quarter course, DOC 3: Imagination, explores many of the themes raised in the previous two courses through cultural artifacts, particularly novels, music, films, and television from late 20th- and early 21st centuries.
The position of Academic Coordinator/Assistant Director is available. This is an academic-year (9-month) appointment which will begin in July 2013 and is renewable bi-annually. This position requires excellent organizational skills, the ability to plan, prioritize, and complete essential tasks and projects, experience in university teaching and supervisory activities, and the ability to work collegially and professionally with faculty, staff, and students. Our ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in a pertinent field and experience in the categories listed below and demonstrated strong leadership or a commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in an academic setting.
Job duties include:
* lecturing to large freshmen classes;
* teaching an upper-division course designed for transfer students;
* assist in hiring, mentoring, and supervising TAs;
* implementing writing instruction and developing writing assignments;
* implementing the use of technology in writing instruction;
* designing written evaluation and assessments of TAs;
* addressing academic integrity issues;
* organizing writing workshops for students;
* participating in regular TA meetings;
* working with co-directors to plan quarterly TA orientations;
* providing support to DOC faculty and staff;
* participating actively in relevant DOC, TMC, and UC San Diego activities;
* maintaining relations with college and campus offices associated with core/writing programs, graduate student education and employment, and other areas as needed;
This position will teach 33% in fall, 50% in winter and 50% in spring as a lecturer with the balance being filled out with academic coordinating during the year.
