Ancient and Medieval Mediterranean/Middle Eastern History
The Department of Sociology, History, and Political Science invites applications for a full time, tenure-track, 10-month, history position at the assistant professor level beginning August 2013. Candidates must be able to teach undergraduate courses in the areas of Ancient and Medieval Mediterranean/Middle Eastern history. Course load will be 3 courses a semester as long as an active research agenda is maintained. Responsibilities include teaching surveys on the first half of World and Western civilization. Preference given to applicants who can teach upper-level classes over as broad a range as possible from Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, through Early Islam, the Ottoman Empire, the Middle East, the Crusades, or the Italian Renaissance. The ability to teach occasional courses on Central or East Asia is a plus because we particularly seek to diversify our curriculum geographically and temporally. This position will be the fourth member of a combined and growing History/Political Science major in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, one of the fast growing schools on one of the fastest growing campuses in the Indiana University System.
Candidates should have an earned doctorate in History or closely related field. ABDs who will earn a doctorate within two years of initial appointment will also be considered. ABDs will have until November of the second year to earn the doctorate.
Candidates are expected to be effective teachers and active researchers. Appropriate university/professional/community service is also required including committee work, assessment of the major, and engaging in campus initiatives to increase retention and enrollment. Teaching experience is required and evidence of effective teaching, publications, and a record of service will be required for tenure and promotion.
