Modern China/World History
The University of California, Irvine Department of History seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in Modern China/World History. We are looking for a scholar with expertise in China's modern period (broadly defined) and an interest in research and teaching that places Chinese phenomena into comparative or global context. The candidate would become part of a strong Asian History caucus and would be expected to both teach courses on China and to contribute to the undergraduate and graduate curriculum of our pioneering program in World History. We are particularly interested in applicants working on the 19th and/or 20th centuries, but will consider specialists in earlier periods if their work addresses themes or processes relevant to both later eras of Chinese history and other parts of the world. All topics and approaches welcome, though scholars working on gender, the environment, commodities, and/or the cultural dynamics of international affairs would be especially good fits.
Applicants should submit a CV, a cover letter explaining your expertise relating to China's past, your world history background and/or interests, and your teaching fields/interests; a writing sample (dissertation chapter or similar length piece) that makes use of Chinese language materials; and three letters of recommendation. Applications submitted on-line at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu by November 15, 2012, will be guaranteed consideration.
