New College of Florida invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in the history of late imperial China (c. 1368-1912), starting in August 2013. PhD preferred; ABD required. Strong research profile expected. The successful candidate will be appointed to the Hoppin Chair in Asian Studies, which carries a competitive salary and a generous research/travel allocation. Additional teaching fields in comparative world history and/or 20th-century China are highly desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a year-long survey of Chinese history, to contribute to the college’s programs in International and Area Studies, and to offer additional courses in his or her area of interest. Teaching load is 2/2 plus sponsorship of theses and tutorials. New College, the nationally recognized honors college of the State University System of Florida, is a small, highly selective, innovative liberal arts institution, which uses narrative evaluations in lieu of grades and requires all students to complete a senior thesis.
