STEM Oral Historian
The HistoryMakers, a national not-for-profit 501 c (3) organization, seeks to have an experienced, full-time STEM oral historian to conduct 3-4 hour videotaped interviews of accomplished African American scientists as part of a nationwide ScienceMakers National Science Foundation STEM initiative.
He or she will work closely with a videographer to ensure all interviews are done in a quality manner. He or she must be literate in STEM fields and preferably have prior experience in science journalism. The interviewer must be able to put the subject at ease. He or she must be well-read in both scientific journals and current science events and be capable of working as part of a team. The interviewer must conduct each interview according to ScienceMakers’ standards, complete necessary paperwork, and be willing to travel for week-long interview trips on an every other week basis. He or she must live in Chicago and work 50-60 hours/week out of The HistoryMakers office when not traveling for interviews.
Prior to conducting video oral histories, the interviewer must complete an extensive training period out of The HistoryMakers office as a STEM researcher and evaluator. In this role, the oral historian/researcher will be responsible for conducting extensive background research and writing outlines and bios prior to each interview, as well as completing post-interview evaluations in accordance with The HistoryMakers procedures and standards.
The interviewer must be ethical with a strong track record, hardworking, able to maintain confidentiality and capable of representing The HistoryMakers andScienceMakers well, while working in a demanding, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
The HistoryMakers is a growing and dynamic 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating an unprecedented national video oral history archival institution recording the stories of both well-known and unsung African American HistoryMakers. The goal is to record at least 5,000 oral history interviews and to expose this material to the public through strategic media, technology, academic and community partnerships. The ideal candidate will have:
- 2 or more years of previous producing/oral history interviewing experience;
- Academic background in STEM AND African American Studies;
- Knowledge of STEM fields and their vocabulary;
- Ability to explain scientific concepts in layman’s terms;
- Expertise in Microsoft Office;
- Strong people skills;
- The desire for a challenge and a passion for the ScienceMakers mission;
- A strong interest in nonprofit management.
The candidate will be responsible for, among other things:
- Making sure all paperwork is completed for each ScienceMaker interviewee;
- Proofreading and correcting transcripts;
- Completing 200 interviews a year.
