The HistoryMakers seeks to hire a full time researcher/writer to assist with multiple educational programs and to complete in-depth research for its video oral history interviews on African Americans in politics, law, art, music, etc. The African American historian will be responsible for:
• Conducting background research on outstanding African Americans to locate their contact information and biographical information prior to interviews using periodicals, the Internet, online resources
• Researching and writing biographies, glossary terms and timeline items for The HistoryMakers website
• Creating curriculum and instructing on African American political history from Reconstruction to the present for two summer Institutes.
• Identifying and connecting with other scholars in the field of African American politics and culture to serve as visiting lecturers for The HistoryMakers.
• Evaluating interviews consistent with The HistoryMakers standards
• Writing grant proposals
Candidates should have a PhD in African American history, African American studies, or another related field. They should demonstrate a strong interest in working in the field of public history and archives, including a desire to work with high school and middle school teachers and students promoting African American history. Candidates must have prior teaching experience with subjects related to African American history; knowledge of Library of Congress Subject Headings; and should be strong researchers, writers and adept at proofreading. Also, they must be extremely organized and able to multi-task. Prior experience with digital archives is a plus, as well as prior experience with a start up and the desire to work in a non-profit environment. This position is required to work 50-60 hours per week out of The HistoryMakers' office.
The HistoryMakers is a growing and dynamic 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating an unprecedented national video oral history archival institution recording the stories of both well known and unsung African American HistoryMakers. The goal is to record at least 5000 oral history interviews and to expose this material to the public through strategic media, technology, academic and community partnerships.
