Two Research Scholar Positions in Premodern China Studies

The Department for Chinese Studies (Institut für Sinologie) at Heidelberg University invites applications for the following
Two Research Scholar positions(wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter, salary level TV-L 13, roughly equivalent to Lecturer in Britain or Assistant Professor in North America)
- in Pre-modern Chinese History (Shang to Yuan political, social or cultural history). The successful applicant will be teaching (in German or English) two classes per semester on the undergraduate (historical, literary, and methodological survey classes) and graduate level (in the respective research area), sharing in administrative duties of the department, advising students, and at the same time maintaining an active and productive research agenda. The position eventually requires fluidity in German, either from the start or within 1, at most 2, years after employment. German language classes will be available for this purpose. Initial appointment can be for up to three years with a possibility of renewal.
- in the field of Early Chinese Manuscript Studies (brush-writings on wood, bamboo, or silk from the 5thc. BCE to the 4thc. CE). The successful applicant will assist in coordinating the activities of a Heidelberg Center of Early Chinese Text and Culture, such as organizing workshops, maintaining international contacts and applying for funding, oversee the building up and maintaining of text and image databases as well as relevant library holdings, maintain an active and productive research agenda, teach (in Chinese, English, or German) one class per semester on the graduate level, and participate in regular reading groups. She or he should have demonstrated expertise in early Chinese manuscripts through substantial published or forthcoming research on the subject and is also expected to have sufficient IT and social skills. Initial appointment is for one year with a possibility of renewal depending on the availability of further funding as well as performance.
Both positions will be affiliated to the chair for Classical China Studies. Candidates should hold a doctoral degree (ABD considered, but with adapted salary) in Chinese Studies, History, or a related discipline with a focus on pre-modern China, have excellent skills in pre-modern and modern Chinese as well as a clear research agenda, and be willing to teamwork. Skills in Japanese, French, or Russian will be advantageous but are not required.
