A new Writing Center at the University of California, San Diego seeks applicants for a Director/Academic Coordinator. This is an opportunity to participate in the creation of a new writing center at a Research I institution with a diverse student body. At UC San Diego, the institutional structure of undergraduate education is unique in that there are six colleges which constitute relatively independent learning and living communities with different GE requirements and writing programs. The writing center will provide peer tutoring services for academic writing to lower and upper division undergraduate students, primarily through the training and employment of undergraduate tutors. Development of the new writing center will be generally overseen by the Council of Provosts, comprised of the chief administrators of the six colleges.

Under the direction of the Chair of the Council of Provosts, the Writing Center Director’s responsibilities include the development and day-to-day administration of the new writing center.
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: interview, hire, train, and supervise undergraduate tutors; meet regularly with tutors; supervise writing center administrative assistant; develop Center policies; oversee short and long-term planning; conduct outreach to university faculty and the campus at large; develop and facilitate writing workshops; maintain pertinent records; and develop assessment tools for tracking the Center’s use and efficacy. The director is expected to meet regularly with administrators from the college writing programs to discuss issues pertinent to the unique writing requirements of each writing program. The training and supervision of undergraduate tutors constitutes a teaching component of the position that is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
Advanced degree with an emphasis in Composition or related discipline. Ph.D., Ed.D., MFA preferred · Demonstrated experience in designing and teaching composition courses · Experience coordinating a writing center, including training and supervising of peer tutors · Experience in writing center evaluation and assessment. · Familiarity with use of technology in writing intensive classes · Professional activities relevant to writing center leadership and administration · Excellent organizational skills and ability to plan and prioritize tasks/projects · Ability to work effectively and professionally with faculty, staff, and students. The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is an academic year non-tenure track position, renewable annually.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
