Position Summary
The Department of History in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Utah State University seeks applications for the position of Department Head. The department has 17 full-time professorial faculty, 2 lecturers, 6 faculty on regional campuses, and 2 staff assistants serving 370 undergraduate majors and 22 graduate students on the Logan campus. In addition to the History undergraduate program and MA program, the department also administers minors in Classics and a major program in Religious Studies, and is home to the academic journals Western Historical Quarterly and Ploutarchos. The department seeks an effective and dynamic academic and administrative leader who will foster excellence in research, teaching, and outreach/service. Responsibilities
The head will provide leadership and guidance for a highly motivated faculty and staff; will oversee all instructional, budgetary, and personnel matters; and will represent the multiple programs and manage the diverse needs of the department, supporting faculty research and teaching, professional development, and the pursuit of fellowships and grants. The Department Head also works with the dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences as a member of the college leadership team.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates, in addition to successfully completing a background check, must meet all requirements to be tenured at the level of full professor in History at USU, including a PhD in History, a strong record of academic achievement, and a record of accomplished teaching.
Preferred Qualifications
The department is open to a wide range of methods, areas, and periods. We particularly seek candidates who have demonstrated 1) the ability to provide leadership while building consensus among faculty and students, 2) the ability to function as a strong advocate for the department and its programs, as well as advise the dean as a member of the college leadership team, and 3) the ability to manage complex budgets both responsibly and thoughtfully.
