Applicants should (i) have a relevant PhD degree; (ii) be dedicated to teaching; (iii) have an excellent record of research; and (iv) be an energetic person with engaging personality that thrives on teamwork. Priority will be given to applicants who specialize in Japanese pre-modern and modern literature, history and arts. Native or near-native Japanese language proficiency is preferred. Candidates capable of inter-disciplinary, comparative, and transnational research are particularly welcome. Duties include (a) teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; (b) project coordination; (c) mentoring students; and (d) enhancing pre-modern humanities research. Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially commencing August 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter, which, subject to funding and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation later. Review of application will begin in February 2012, and applications will be accepted until the post is filled.

Salary will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
