The History Department at Virginia Tech seeks an innovative scholar, adept in emerging technologies, with experience in the teaching and practice of public history. Applicants with specialties in areas such as environment, science, health, migration, culture, media, policy, and other interdisciplinary fields that support programs at Virginia Tech are especially encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate for this tenure-track appointment will help build the department’s emphasis on public history in undergraduate and graduate programs. He or she will be expected to teach courses in public history; identify, develop and supervise internship programs; and create courses in digital history, visual materials, and other topics appropriate to the candidate’s specialty. Furthermore, the new faculty member will contribute to the university’s service and outreach missions by building partnerships with area cultural institutions and community groups, working with regional or federal agencies, participating in grant writing, and collaborating on multi-disciplinary projects. The potential for excellence in teaching and research is required, as is thecommitment to work effectively with a diverse campus population in support of Virginia Tech’s “Principles of Community.”
The Carnegie Foundation classifies Virginia Tech as a research university with “very high research activity.” The normal teaching load in the History Department is two courses per semester.
