The Research Participation Program for the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command's Intelligence Directorate (JPAC J2) provides opportunities to participate in JPAC’s on-going applied research and development projects. JPAC's mission is to achieve the fullest possible accounting of all US servicemembers lost during our Nation's previous conflicts.
Several appointments are available within JPAC J2. The participant will have the opportunity to analyze historical records and materials to produce thorough detailed reports for use by search and recovery teams in the process of investigating and identifying incidences of missing American servicemen from operations during WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Cold War.
This appointment includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Collecting, researching, cataloguing, and analyzing relevant historical data from primary, secondary, or cursory sources.
- Extracting critical elements of information and conveying it in writing for a diverse audience.
Applicants should have received a Master's or Doctoral degree in history, military studies, political geography, international studies, or a related discipline within three years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected on or about the starting date. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The program is open to all qualified US citizens without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran.
Participants are selected based on academic records, recommendations, applied research interests, and compatibility of background with applied research programs and projects at JPAC and/or the host installation.
The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed for up to two additional years based upon recommendation of JPAC J2.
The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The stipend rate is determined based upon level of education, training, and experience. Inbound travel and moving expenses are reimbursed according to established policies. Travel and other costs will also be reimbursed for training related to the project and approved by ORISE and the host installation.
The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health plans are available through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for Postgraduate Internship participants.
