The holder of the chair will play an important role in strengthening the universitys research and educational mission. The focus of teaching and research will be on comparative European history, especially of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Maastricht University
Maastricht University (UM) is the youngest university in the Netherlands and renowned for its unique, innovative, problem-based learning system, which is characterized by a small-scale, student-oriented approach. Research at the UM is multidisciplinary and deals mainly with contemporary issues. Currently the UM has around 11,500 students and 3,000 employees. Reflecting the universitys strong international profile, a considerable number of both students and staff are from abroad.
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) has 200 employees and 1600 students. Almost all programmes are offered in English. Its students come from all over the world. FASoS offers two 3-year bachelors programmes: Arts and Culture, and European Studies, six different 1-year masters courses and two 2-year research masters programmes. It has a Graduate School with an intake of about 10 PhD students each year. Research is organized across three programmes: Politics and Culture in Europe; Science, Technology and Society Studies; and Cultural Memory and Diversity.
Tasks
The professor in European history will be Chair of the History Department. As regards teaching he/she contributes especially to our European masters programmes and our research masters Cultures of Arts, Science and Technology, and European Studies. He/she will develop international research projects and attract external funding.
Qualifications
A strong background in comparative history of modern Europe; an outstanding track record of international publications; interested in interdisciplinary work; experienced in administration and academic governance; a successful fundraiser and manager of international research projects; an inspiring coach of PhD students; an experienced teacher with affinity for problem-based learning; an excellent command of English.

In view of recruitment policies and the composition of our professoriate at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Maastricht University in general, female candidates with equal qualifications will be given preferential treatment.
Appointment
We offer a five-year contract. After a positive assessment the position will be made permanent. Generally the teaching load is 55%. However, teaching load can be reduced to 40% in order to facilitate the chair in attracting external research funds.
A gross salary of between 4,904.00 and 7,142.00 per month will be offered (based on a full-time appointment and according to standard salary levels for Professors, HL 2).
