H-Net Digital Preservation Policies and Procedures
Roles and Responsibilities for Digital Preservation of the H-Net E-Mail Lists
Key roles for the digital preservation of the H-Net e-mail lists include preservation, system, and editorial administration, as well as general H-Net and MATRIX administration. Responsibilities for those roles are presented here, followed by links to contact MATRIX and H-Net staff and administrators currently filling the roles.
Preservation Administration
- Evaluates and monitors digital preservation practices for the H-Net e-mail lists
- Develops and recommends digital preservation strategies for the H-Net e-mail lists in keeping with best practices, evolving standards, and practicalities
- Oversees implementation of technical enhancements to the H-Net e-mail list digital preservation system
- Develops, promotes, and promulgates digital preservation policies and procedures for the H-Net e-mail lists
- Maintains awareness and knowledge of best practices and evolving standards in digital preservation

System Administration
- Provides preservation administration with the information required to effectively evaluate the technological components of the H-Net e-mail list preservation system
- Advises preservation administration on the feasibility and practicality of recommendations for technical enhancements to the H-Net e-mail list preservation system
- Implements technical enhancements to the H-Net e-mail list preservation system
- Maintains and monitors MATRIX and H-Net systems and data in keeping with digital preservation policies and procedures
- Remains abreast of new developments in LISTSERV, e-mail list software in general, and system hardware and software that would impact preservation of the H-Net e-mail lists

Editorial Administration
- Monitors H-Net’s e-mail-based discussion lists, with each editor determining whether submitted messages are appropriate to the academic discussion of their particular list
- Edits messages before posting to their list if necessary, in consultation with the original message author when substantive changes are required
- Submits approved messages for posting to the LISTSERV-based H-Net e-mail lists

H-Net Administration
- Approves and supports digital preservation policies for the H-Net e-mail lists, as developed and recommended by preservation administration
- Approves and supports technological enhancements and changes to the H-Net e-mail list preservation system, as recommended by preservation administration and implemented and maintained by system administration
- Develops and promotes general policies governing H-Net, as put forth in the H-Net Constitution and H-Net By-Laws
