The EU Marie Curie-funded project 'Nature Entangled' at the University of Exeter is offering a PhD studentship (four years) beginning in October 2014.
The generous studentship will include tuition fees and a maintenance payment of £14,069 p.a., increasing in line with doctoral studentship rates, as well as assistance with research-related equipment and travel expenses.
The subject of the studentship will be the history of conceptualising 'Nature' in China and Europe from 1500-1800. Working across art (architectural) history, cultural history and China-Europe relations, you will examine the historical legacy shared between China and Europe in envisioning a 'natural' living environment in relation to the well-being of citizens and the state.
The project will include fieldwork (archive based) in both Europe and China. Additional language skills in Italian, Latin, French, Dutch, or Chinese are desirable.
You will be an active member of a research team of three and will contribute to the project's publications as well as produce an outstanding PhD thesis.
