In recent years it is widely recognized that Japanese pop culture formed through acculturation of Western culture (such as anime, manga, fashion) has become popular around the world. In this context, the term “kawaii” can be considered as a key word, of which even the derivative “kawai” has been used in France. However, the representations of kawaii/kawai are not identical and vary according to the position of the speakers, for example the observers and practitioners in France and in Japan. This talk will reflect on “differences” in representations of kawaii/kawai, examine why they occurred, and attempt to define what are features of “Japanese” culture in the transcultural communication age.
About the speaker:
Kyoko Koma received her Ph.D. from Osaka University and is currently associate professor and head of the Asian Center at Mykolas Romeris University in Lithuania. She is presently residing in Kyoto for one year as a visiting research scholar at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies. Her research interests include intercultural communication studies, Japanese popular cultural studies (fashion), and Japanese and French language education.
