Mystic Seaport's 35th Annual “Music of the Sea” Symposium June 13 & 14, 2014
Mystic Seaport Museum, the University of Connecticut, Avery Point, and The United States Coast Guard Academy are seeking paper proposals in History, Folklore, Literature, Ethnomusicology, or other disciplines addressing aspects of music or verse of the sea or inland waters from the Age of Sail through today. The two-day symposium is part of a three-day event celebrating seafaring life through musical performance. Sessions will be held at the University of Connecticut, Avery Point and at Mystic Seaport. Topics have included shipboard work songs, songs of maritime or other occupational trades, seafaring cultures, ethnic influences, gender, cultural exchanges, ballad and broadside traditions, regional interests, and popular culture.
UPDATED SUBMISSION DEADLINE March 1, 2014. Graduate students encouraged.
