"Ways of Knowing: Graduate Conference on Religion at Harvard Divinity School“ convenes in Cambridge, Massachusetts on October 25-26, 2013.
One hundred and twenty graduate students and early career scholars representing sixty-five academic institutions from across the United States and the world will present papers on religion utilizing historical, anthropological, sociological, philosophical, theological, and literary frameworks. The event will include thirty panels covering a broad spectrum of religious traditions in a variety of historical, geographical, and social contexts.
The conference will feature two special topic modules. The first will include five panels on ritual in South Asian, East Asian, Jewish, and Christian contexts, past and present. Harvard Professor Michael Puett will be its guest speaker. The second module will include four panels examining constructions of autonomy in modern European theology and philosophy, in contexts ranging from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. Harvard Professor David Lamberth will be its guest speaker.
The conference will also host two faculty-led lunchtime discussion panels on career development, the first on academic publishing and the second on preparation for the academic job market.
The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Sherine Hamdy of Brown University.
The conference is co-sponsored by Science, Religion, and Culture at Harvard Divinity School and by the New England/Maritimes Region of the American Academy of Religion.
