Each spring semester since 2008, the University of Texas at San Antonio
has hosted a daylong symposium on African American Studies. Our events
have explored such topics as Black popular culture, the First 100 Days
of the Obama Presidency, and African American Language.
On February 20, 2014, we will continue our annual tradition of offering
an outstanding program centered on analyzing African American
experiences. Notably, the 2014 symposium will coincide with the
installation of the National Endowment for the Arts sponsored exhibition
of For All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil
Rights on UTSA’s Main Campus. See website:
Especially encouraged are proposals for organized panels, workshops, and
performances addressing how African American material and visual/print
cultures have influenced discourses of race and the struggle for civil
rights over the last 100 years.
