This conference celebrates the on-going work of Professor Paul Hills on the occasion of his retirement from The Courtauld. It takes as its themes, three subjects which are central to the scholarship of his books, The Light of Early Italian Painting (1987) and Venetian Colour: Marble, Mosaic, Painting and Glass, 1250-1550 (1999), and his more recent publications on veils. Although much of Paul Hills’ research and teaching have focused on renaissance Italy, it has always been informed by interaction with artists and an engagement with the art and ideas of other periods. This conference, then, seeks to bring together artists and art historians, renaissance scholars and philosophers in a discussion of light, colour and veils.
