Creative districts around the world
Celebrating the 500th anniversary of Bairro Alto
LÚnia Marques, Jorge Mangorrinha and Greg Richards (eds.)
In December 2013, the historical district Bairro Alto in Lisbon is celebrating its 500th anniversary. Having undergone many historical, cultural and social changes, Bairro Alto has been developing recently as a hub for night life, art and creativity in Lisbon.
In this context we propose producing a collective volume gathering cases from historical creative districts in different parts of the world.
These districts often share dynamic processes of urban regeneration, playing new roles in the territorial and human geography of the city. Each district also has its own history and its particularities, and the encounters and stories that occur there often only make sense in this context. This publication aims at giving visibility to these districts that gained a new life from the creative dynamics of the cities around them.
The expressions of interest should be sent to the editors (firstname.lastname@example.org) by 11th February 2013 (100 words description in English or Portuguese) and, after acceptance, the complete cases (cc. 1000-1500 words) should be sent accompanied of one or two visuals (photographs, drawings or others) by the 30th March 2013. The submission of the cases implies permission for commercial use.
The publication is expected in October 2013. The negotiations with a publisher are in course, for printed and/or online version.
