This is a one day conference which will be run by the Radicalism and the New Media Group at the University of Northampton on 20 June 2012. Its objectives include:
*Directly addressing the academic and political debate over the use of the term ‘genocide’ regarding Darfur, and discussing comparisons to the genocides of the 20th Century.
*Looking at the manner in which the international media has shaped perceptions of the Darfur conflict.
*Questioning the extent to which the Sudanese media has licensed race-based violence.
*Identifying the roots of the conflict through analysis of historic understandings of ethnicity in Sudan and of the policies of both colonial and post-colonial governments.
*Appreciating the role of political Islam in the conflict.
Kindly email abstracts of no more than 250 words in length to Dr Will Berridge at William.Berridge@northampton.ac.uk. A draft programme and details of registration will be circulated in early 2013.
