Master's programs at Northeastern
Northeastern University Master's level programs allow specialization in
world history in three distinct programs:
- the general MA in history
- the MA with specialization in public history
- the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
For full details, see the web sites of the
History Department and its associated
World History Center
The MA program
admits from 20 to 30 students a year in total, of whom about five each
year have come to focus on world history. In a program of six
terms in two years (on the quarter system) students take a total of fourteen
courses. The department has chosen to emphasize global dimensions of
history in the majority of its courses. Courses explicitly addressing
world history, taken by students in both MA and Ph.D. programs, include:
- Global Historiography
- Approaches to World History
- Seminar in Global Social History
- Seminar in Global Political History
- Seminar in Global Cultural History
- The African Diaspora
All MA students take a rigorous Methodology course in their opening term.
- General program students take two research seminars and may write a
thesis (with three courses of credit).
- Public history students take one research seminar, four courses in
public
history, two field work courses, and complete a public history project.
- MAT students take one research seminar, and take a year-long
interdisciplinary teaching seminar along with MAT students in other
fields.
In addition, MA students may participate in the activites of the
World History Center.
Beginning 1998, MAT studetns will be able to participate in a
collaborative program with the Boston Public Schools on preparing for the
teaching of world history in grades 9 and 10.
