Query From Michael Gherke Mike9493@aol.com 09 July 1996
I am Michael Gherke, a Ph.D. student in history at West Virginia University. I am doing research on Margaret Philipse, also spelled Filipse, and Flipsen, a seventeenth century New York merchant. I would very much appreciate sources for this remarkable woman.
Sources consulted to date are:
Booth, Mary L. History of the City of New York (1859)
Hall, Edward Hagaman Philipse Manor Hall (1912)
Bonomi, Patricia A Factious People: Politics and Society in Colonial New York (1971)
Ritchie, Robert The Duke's Province: A Study of New York Politics and Society, 1664-1691 (1977-primary)
Murphy, Henry C.; trans. Jaspar Dankins and Peter Sluyter Journal of a Voyage to New York and a Tour in Several of the American Colonies in 1679-80 (1867)
Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New York
I am hoping there may exist a collection of papers on Margaret Philipse which I may be able to obtain through I.L.L. Or, other sources which I have failed to uncover. Of course, any help is very much appreciated.
