I wanted to thank several of you who wrote to me privately when I posted a query about a workshop that I and another professor were to present about co-education. Many of you shared personal comments about having been here at the Claremont Colleges (or knowing someone who had) when the college went co-ed; it was interesting, enlightening, and helpful for us to be better informed about the situation here 20 years ago.
The material we used which may be of interest to list members included:
Paula Caplan (Toronto 1993) _Lifting a Ton of Feathers: A Woman's Guide to Surviving the Academy_ (I may have the title after the colon a little off)
Veve Clark et al (Routledge 1996) _Antifeminism in the Academy_
"Women Faculty at Work in the Classroom,or, Why it still hurts to be a woman in Labor," by Bernice Resnick Sandler from Center for Women Policy Studies (202) 872 1770
"The Classroom Climate: A Chilly one for Women" by Roberta M. Hall from Project on the Status and Educ. of Women of the Assoc. of Am. Colleges
"Out of the Classroom: A Chilly Campus Climate for Women?" Roberta M. Hall and Bernice R. Sandler, also Project on the Status and Educ. of Women of the Associ of American Colleges, 1818 R St., NW, WDC 20009
A couple people also suggested a clip from NBC Dateline from c. 1994-95 on gender in a kindergarten classroom; we were unfortunately unable to get ahold of this in time for our presentation.
Thanks again for your helpful suggestions and relaying of personal experiences.
