I'm certain your friend knows about the Navajo Code Talkers. A book has recently been written about them and one fellow, Carl Gorman, is still quite active on the Navajo Reservation. Perhaps you friend would want to contact him.

This is a pretty broad subject. Can you perhaps narrow it down a bit? Are you interested in all Native Americans in wars--and what specifically are you referring to as modern wars? Vietnam? World War II? Wars of the later 19th century? Is your friend looking for individuals to interview? Previous work that's been done? If I know a little bit more about your request, perhaps I can help.
