You might find the University of Utah dissertation "Warrior into Welder," by Kathryn L. MacKay (currently teaching at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah) helpful. I don't have the bibliographic information at hand; I think it was bound in 1988. She looks at Native American wage workers in the twentieth century; seems like it could be of some use to you.
