I am working on a project with Gerry Zahavi here at the University at Albany in which we are exploring Communism and Socialism in 1920s and 1930s Sheridan County, Montana. Communism was very significant here in this time period. I am keen on looking at the data we have, obtained from the 1920 US census, tax assesment lists, election returns, and local genealogies, with a local community in Canada that showed significant leftist electoral presence. I am writing to request any bibliographic or other information as to whether such local studies of Canadian communities have been undertaken or are being undertaken. I am familiar with the work of Lipset, Clark, Brym but am trying to explore sources that dovetail more nicely with our research.

I would also be interested in local studies of the Socreds

Thanks in advance.

One obvious possibility would be Canadian mining communites in the 20s and 30s either in Cape Breton or in the Crows Nest Pass. There is much good work on both areas but you might start with that of David Frank on Cape Breton and of Al Seager on the Crows Nest Pass. Frank is at the Univeristy of New Brunswick and Al is at Simon Fraser University. Needless to say I know nothing of Sheridan Co Montana so these might not be best choices.

For Cdn labour history bibliographic info see ongoing biblios in Labour/ le Travail which are also now mounted on the Memorial University of Newfoundland Gopher. Contact Michael Lonardo at MUN Library if you have trouble with that. He's on email at mlonardo@morgan.ucs.mun.ca
