For my US History survey I am somewhat limited by what is available in
French, but I put together a collection of primary sources that include
excerpts of the following:

Winthrop, Model of Christian Charity
Edwards, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God
Franklin, Autobiography
Paine, Common Sense
Madison, Federalist #10 & #51
Tocqueville, Democracy in America
Douglass, Narrative
Stowe, Uncle Tom's Cabin
Lincoln, Gettysburg Address
Turner, Significance of the Frontier
Sinclair, Jungle
King, I have a Dream
Friedan, Feminine Mystique

I also use political texts that have been translated (inaugural
addresses, Monroe Doctrine, Truman Doctrine, etc.)
Of course, I'm still looking for more translations of primary texts
authored by women (e.g. Elizabeth Cady Stanton's Declaration of
Sentiments; Jane Addams's Twenty Years at Hull House).

I look forward to hearing what others use in American Studies courses
outside the US. Thanks for bringing up the subject.
