For those who don't know Martin MArty he is perhaps the most
distinguished authority in the US on religion and its role in
American life in the nation.

On Thursday, April 18, 1996, the 4th annual Joanna
Jackson Goldman Memorial Lecture on American Civilization and
Government will be presented at the Library of Congress by

MARTIN E. MARTY

Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor, University of
Chicago Divinity School.

The lecture, "AMERICA AFTER ITS TRAUMA: Tribalism, Totalism,
and the Common Good," will be given in the Library's Montpelier
Room, sixth floor, Madison Building, beginning at 8:00pm. It is
