Hello. I, John Whalen-Bridge, have been teaching Enlish
language & some American culture in Okinawa for three years. I write about
American fiction and am particularly interested in the political novel. Also
am interested in Eastern religion in United States: Buddhist writers and films
and whatnot.

My research interests are in the Japanese history in the later part
of the 19th and the first half of this centuries. The current research
topic is TOKUTOMI Sohou, a famous journalist and historian from 1880s
to 1950s. The behaviors of the United States in and regarding this
part of the globe in those decades highly affected his positionings.
Perhaps, this is why I join the H-USA at its initial stage.

My current title is distinguished professor of American Studies and
folklore and coordinator of the American Studies Program at
Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg. I am interested in this
list because I will be a Fulbright Lecturer at Osaka University
in 1996-1997 and I want to learn more about international views of
American Studies, and American culture. I teach and have written
on folklore and folklife, ethnicity, material culture, Gilded Age
and Progressive era history, labor and immigration.
