Icebreaker #32: Richard Straw rstraw@RUNET.EDU

My name is Richard Straw and I am currently a professor of history at
Radford University in Radford, Virginia. I teach courses in the broad field of
the American South plus
the U.S. Surveys. I am, at this point in my career, mostly interested in
teaching issues and in discussions about the most effective ways to
use writing and collaborative work to enhance student learning of
history. My survey classes are about 40-50 in size and the electives are
about 25-30. I am very interested in discussing comparative history
approaches with anyone from outside the U.S. and in collaborating on an
internet project that would hook up my students with students in another
country who are studying American History. I have published (articles)
research in a variety of areas including southern labor history
(United Mine Workers of America), Appalachian Foodways, historical
photography, and Appalachian music. I would also like to arrange a
faculty exchange with a colleague in northern Europe, preferably Germany,
so I could pursue research on comparative coal mining lore and music. My
department would be amenable to such an exchange and we would welcome
someone from a variety of fields in history.
