Subject: American Studies Programs on the WWW

From: Jeff Finlay, Administrator/American Studies Crossroads Project
<finlayji@guvax.georgetown.edu>

I recently compiled a list of American Studies programs that have
created web pages. This list is by no means comprehensive, and I
would very much like to hear of omissions and further suggestions,
but I certainly found many more URLs (addresses) than I expected,
and it seems to me that the web is proving a popular medium for
American Studies communities both in the US and elsewhere.

I append the addresses, followed by some comments.

Websites of American Studies Programs in the United States:

Websites of American Studies Programs outside the United States:
====================================

Australian Center for American Studies

John F. Kennedy Institute, Berlin

Keele University, UK

As I say, this is a somewhat selective list and I would like to
hear of omissions. But nonetheless I have been very pleasantly
surprised. Some departments have not only loaded information
about their own faculty and courses but invested time in making
available samples of student work and papers from conferences.

Several websites that particularly drew my attention:

Georgetown
http://www.georgetown.edu/departments/amer_studies/amer_studies.html

Check out in particular the Civil War course assignments at
http://www.georgetown.edu/departments/amer_studies/civilwar.html

U. Maryland-College Park
http://www.inform.umd.edu:8080/EdRes/Colleges/ARHU/Depts/AmericanStudies

There are some brilliant models for courses incorporating the web at
the following URLs, representing the work of David Silver and Professors
Jo Paoletti and Mary Sies:

Diversity in American Culture
http://www.otal.umd.edu/~jpaolett/AMST212.html

Growing Up American
http://otal.umd.edu/~jpaolett/AMST418D.html

The Greenbelt Museum
http://otal.umd.edu/~googie/vg/intro.html

The website of the Australian Center for American Studies
(http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/acas/) contains, in a well-hidden
submenu the entire proceedings of their 1993 Fulbright conference:

The News Media: Responsibility And Power
http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/acas/fulbright/index.html

Lastly, I cite my favourite of all the sites I found. People in
the United States need to be reminded that our field is not seen
in exactly the same terms, or subdivided the same way, as we
are in the habit of doing. This site does an excellent job of
presenting a European perspective on American Studies:

John F. Kennedy Institute, Berlin

(Editor's Note)
This is an excellent list. On behalf of H-USA, I would like to give
special thanks to Professor Finlay for sharing this list with us.
