California Air Quality Data
http://www.arb.ca.gov/aqd/aqd.htm
This extensive database is developed by and maintained by the California EPA through its California Air Resources Board (ARB). The database contains information on major pollutants for every county in California, many dating back to 1980. Updated frequently, there are maps, tables and graphs that highlight complex data, including hourly reports, in various file formats. Much of the site is interactive and easy to access and manipulate. (1 May 2001)
California As I Saw It
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/cbhtml/cbhome.html
This site, subtitled "First-Person Narratives of California's Early Years, 1849-1900," consists of the "full texts and illustrations of 190 works [representing approximately 40,000 pages and including more than 3,000 illustrations] documenting the formative era of California's history through eyewitness accounts. It captures the pioneer experience; encounters between Anglo-Americans and the diverse peoples who had preceded them; the transformation of the land by mining, ranching, agriculture, and urban development; the often-turbulent growth of communities and cities; and California's emergence as both a state and a place of uniquely American dreams." Search by keyword or browse the index of authors, subjects, or titles. Part of the American Memory Project, Library of Congress.

http://cwis.usc.edu/dept/LAS/history/historylab/LAPUHK/index.html
Philip J. Ethington of the University of Southern California authored this experiment in scholarly publishing. This is the first online article refereed by the History Collaborative, a joint venture of the American Historical Reveiw and the Journal of American History. It is a multimedia, much-hyperlinked evaluation of urban history from a skeptical, post-modern perspective. The site includes very effective temporal maps tracing the growth of Los Angeles and its minority populations.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

San Diego History
http://www.sandiegohistory.org/index.html
The San Diego Historical Society put together this site, which includes a large photo gallery, time line, several articles from its journal, biographies of famous San Diegans (surprisingly not including Ted Williams), short essays, mostly on antiquarian topics, and virtual tours of the 1915 and 1935 expositions that are largely based on postcards. Among the articles is an excellent essay by Carlos M. Larralde and Richard Griswold del Castillo on the Ku Klux Klan in San Diego, where it took an anti-Mexican turn. The essay is based in large part on the Klan's archives, which the Society owns.
