Assistant Professor; B.A. Manhattan College; Ph.D. Graduate and University Center City University of New York (Political Science) Teaching and research interests include urban politics, urban revitalization, community development, intergovernmental relations, state and local politics, and the intersection of race, ethnicity, gender, and class. My research interests have explored many facets of urban revitalization and community development at various scales, and my agenda for the next five years refines and extends these themes. I work closely with community organizations, neighborhood residents, block clubs, and citywide coalitions to provide accurate parcel level data for community planning; assist with neighborhood asset mapping and problem identification (i.e., need for recreation spaces); assess the incidence of predatory lending behavior; and respond to the lack of access to healthcare and healthcare education (health promotion), severely dilapidated recreation spaces, crisis level drug dealing, gang violence and drag racing, and an endemic lack of responsiveness from public institutions. Tackling these issues involves much more than simply 'outreach' or 'service' functions for a university: these concerns have inspired widespread and interdisciplinary scholarly debate over the roles of public, private, and nonprofit institutions at federal, state, and local levels. My published work has engaged these debates, and my current work refines and extends a critical perspective on the role of community organizations working in the context of shifting scales of governance.
