Subject: Research Query: Police History
Hello! My Name is Dwight David Watson, doctoral candidate in History at the University of Houston, cuurently writing my dissertation "The Transformation of the Houston Police Department, 1940-1993". I am asking for any reference sources, conference papers and general information on how public institutions throughout the South carried their process of intergregation or diversification. I am examining the how race, demographic changes, economic forces and political realignments all contributed the transformation of HPD.
Additionally, any comparative studies on police in northern cities would also be helpful. Thanks!

Editor's Note:
Dwight, see robin Kelly's article in the JAH (June 1993) v.80, no. 1 "We Are Not What We Seem": Rethinking Black Working Class Opposition in the Jim Crow South." Also see anything by Mark T. Haller on the Police in general (though not necessarily on the South or on race relations). Also, see Lawrence M. Friedman's *Crime and Punishment in American History* bibliography on police history, page 469-470. You may also want to post this to H-Law??

Suggest you have a look at W. Marvin Dulaney's _Black police in America_, just published this year by Indiana University Press. I haven't seen it myself, but I expect it might be helpful.

If you are not already familiar with W. Marvin Dulaney's *Black Police in America* (Indiana UP, 1996), you will want to check it out. Houston is one of several Southern metropolitan areas that Dulaney examines (Atlanta and Miami are among the others) in studying the rise and evolution of black police forces. My own research (M.A. thesis) dealt extensively with police community relations in black Miami in the 1960s. It does not touch upon any of the institutional themes you are looking at, but since you mentioned race, I thought I would throw it out there. Feel free to e-mail me directly if you would like more information. Or if you actually want to look at the thing, search for: Eric Tscheschlok, "Long Road to Rebellion: Miami's Liberty City Riot of 1968" (M.A. thesis, Florida Atlantic University, 1995). I warn you, however, it is not a pretty sight.
