I'm finishing a Masters in History program, researching a city here in Brazil, Juiz de Fora, that developed a strong "progressive" discourse during the XIXth century, reaffirming as part of its progress the domination of slaves. I would like to receive any information about local elites in urban centers in the antebellum South. Did they have these same concerns: urbanization, city "glamour", cultural life(building theaters, hosting balls, etc.), what is called by Ricardo Salles the "aristocratic ideal of modernization".
Any information can be sent to my e-mail address, jamesg@oraculo.lcc.ufmg.br English, Portuguese is fine, Spanish I can handle well. Thank you!
