Communicating through the Network

When communicating through the H-SKAND Network there are a coupple of things you should observe. There is a general Policy on Queries for the Network, set by the editors, to ensure that the posting is of relevance to most subscribers. Also there are some technical guidelines that you should follow when communicating through the Network.

Sending Mail to the Network

The tone and content of H-SKAND depend primarily and directly on the subscribers. The editors want to encourage lively, informal, productive discussion and exchange of information. To that end, we ask that contributions be composed with some consideration for the needs of a busy audience of scholars.

To SEND your own message to all subscribers, send an e-mail note directly to:

H-SKAND@H-NET.MSU.EDU

Extra-long messages will also be accepted, but may be stored on a fileserver for interested subscribers, rather than posting them via electronic mail to everyone. Some messages and discussion threads are also stored at this WWW site.

To REPLY to a message so that all subscribers can read it, be sure that the outgoing reply is directed to H-SKAND@H-NET.MSU.EDU, and not to the original author or to the editor. Replies intended only for individual authors should be sent directly to the author.

To send a message intended only for the editor, send it to h-skand@hist.ou.dk and mark it Private.

When you send a message to H-SKAND, you don't have to worry about the layout of the text, as the layout will be set by the editors. There are limited layout options when sending email anyway, and what looks good on your screen may look completely different on another.

You can use these layout elements:

CAPITALS Use capital letters if you want to emphazize something or for headings
[Sqaure brackets] Use sqaure brackets for book titles etc.
_Underline_ You can underline something in this way
"Quatation marks" Use the "Quatation marks" as a substitute for italic text

Another problem when sending email are the special Nordic characters, that is not understood by all email programs. They should therefore be substituted with "normal" characters:

Æ =index.html Ae æ =index.html ae
Ø =index.html Oe ø =index.html oe
Å =index.html Aa å =index.html aa
Ä =index.html Ae ä =index.html ae
Ö =index.html Oe ö =index.html oe
Ü =index.html Ue ü =index.html ue
Ð =index.html D ð =index.html d

Recieving Mail from H-SKAND

The editor will usually code messages into one of several categories noted in the Subject Header to help the subscribers sort their incoming mail:

QUERY: Topic
The following message is a request for information. If you are asking about research aids or bibliographical references, it would be helpful if you defined the project and indicated what sources you have consulted so far.

REPLY: Topic
An answer to a previously-posted QUERY.

COMMENT: Topic
A message that commences a new conversational thread or that picks up and broadens an existing thread.

ONLINE CONF: Submitter
A query, reply or comment within the monthly online conference. Submissions in this category may be posted as new individual threads.

PRESENTATION: Name or Title
A presentation of a new member of the network or of a new research project.

CROSSPOST [Network]: Topic
Crossposting from another network of a single message or discussion thread relevant to H-SKAND.

LITERATURE: Title

REVIEW: Title

CONFERENCE: Title or Topic
Description of a conference, but without a specific call for papers.

FYI: Topic

If you should loose a message needed for further reference, you can always retrieve it from the H-SKAND Fileserver.
