SHGAPE Council Minutes
April 15, 1994


President Kathryn Kish Sklar called the Council of the Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era to order at 5:00 p.m., April 15, 1994, in the DeKalb Room , Atlanta Hilton, Atlanta, Ga.. Present were officers, council members and SHGAPE members Kathryn Kish Sklar, Charles C. Calhoun, Robert Cherny, Stacy Cordery, Ruth Crocker, Roger Daniels, Joseph A. Fry, Donna Gabaccia, Judith Sealander, Marjorie Spruill Wheeler, Kriste Lindenmeyer, and Roger D. Bridges.

The minutes were approved as distributed.

Secretary-Treasurer Bridges reported the checkbook balance as of April 14, 1994, at $4,037.66. Daniels moved acceptance of the report, seconded by Fry. Motion passed.

Cherny reported on H-Net and noted the beginning of H-SHGAPE pending SHGAPE Council approval. Cherny moved acceptance of recommendation, Calhoun seconded. Motion passed. Cherny agreed to moderate H-SHGAPE for the time being, but noted the need for additional moderators. He agreed, also, to chair a board of editors for H-SHGAPE that was charged with evaluating the program and preparing an annual evaluation and report.

Fry reported that a membership flyer had been prepared and distributed by mail. He had attempted, so far with little success, to find regional representatives who would, among other things, distribute SHGAPE Flyers at regional meetings. He indicated that he would revise the membership promotional flyer.

Cordery recommended that graduate students be consulted concerning their interests within the organizaiton, and that graduate membership on the council be continued. She requested further, that because she was no longer a graduate student that she be relieved of her responsibilities as graduate representative. Daniels moved that Cordery be discharged with the thanks of the Council for representing graduate students so ably. Seconded by Crocker, passed unanimously. The nominating committee was directed to select a graduate student for nomination to the council.

Ruth Crocker, Chairman of the Prize Committee, reported that William McBride had won the $500 prize for the best published article for 1992-1993. After discussion concerning who might be eligible, Wheeler moved that all articles fitting the criteria be considered. Sealander seconded the motion. It carried.

Crocker moved that the nominating committee consist of Samuel McSeveney, Chair, Marjorie Wheeler and William Link. Sealander seconded. Motion carried.

After discussion about interpretation of Constitution regarding terms, especially for President and President-election, it was agreed that Cherny's term would expire at the 1996 AHA meeting, but that the President-elect, upon assuming the presidency, would serve two years, and all subsequent presidents would do so.

Marjorie Spruill Wheeler moved that SHGAPE charge $100 per use to any for profit company that wished to rent it. Cherny seconded the motiton that carried unanimously.

President Sklar adjourned the Council meeting at 6:00 p.m. so that all could attend the SHGAPE reception.
