Vice-President Charles W. Calhoun called the Council of the Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era to order at approximately 5:10 p.m., March 24, 1990, in the Washington Hilton, at the annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians. The following Board Members and interested members were present: Calhoun, Roger Daniels, John Dobson, Roger Bridges, John Dobson, John McClymer, and Thomas Rosenbaum.
Roger Daniels moved and John Dobson seconded the motion to approve the minutes of the December 29, 1990, meeting as submitted. Motion carried.
By consensus it was agreed that the Constitution should be submitted to the membership for approval. The ballots will be returned to the Secretary-Treasurer.
After a brief discussion, Daniels moved that the by-laws be distributed for approval by mail. Dobson seconded the motion, which carried. Daniels further moved that a fifth section "Council Quorum" be added. It will read:
5. Council Quorum
In order to conduct business, a council quorum shall consist of one-third of the elected members, plus one.
Dobson seconded the motion, which carried.
John Dobson agreed to consider editing the newsletter if no one else could be found. Vice President Calhoun agreed to continue searching for possible candidates.
The Council resumed discussion of a SHGAPE sponsored prize in order to increase interest in the new organization. The matter was tabled without resolution.
With no further business to come before the Council, it adjourned to meet on call of the President at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association in December 1990 in Washington, D.C.
Respectfully Submitted,
Roger D. Bridges
Secretary-Treasurer
Approved 12/28/90
