President Roger Daniels called the Council of the Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era to order at 5:00 p.m., January 7, 1994, in Powell Room B, San Francisco Hilton and Towers, San Francisco, Cal.. Present were officers and council members Roger Daniels, Kathryn Kish Sklar, Charles C. Calhoun, Robert Cherny, Ruth Crocker, Kriste Lindenmeyer, and Roger D. Bridges. Also present were Richard Jensen and D'Ann Campbell.

Sklar moved, seconded by Crocker, that the minutes be approved as distributed at the meeting. Motion passed.

Secretary-Treasurer Bridges reported the checkbook balance as of January 2, 1994, at $3719.20. For the twelve month period ending December 31, 1993, the Society had received $2,022 in memberships and $69.62 in interest income for a total income of 2,091.62. Bridges moved acceptance of the report, seconded by Sklar. Motion passed.

Bridges announced the results of the SHGAPE election as follows: Vice-President/President-Elect Robert Cherny, San Francisco State University Council Members (3 yr terms) Peter Argersinger, University of Maryland, BaltimoreCounty Judith Sealander, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green Donna Gabaccia, University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Bridges, chairman of the Constitution and Bylaws Revision Committee (consisting of himself, Cherny and Wheeler), distributed a revised draft of the Constitution for consideration by the Council. After discussion, Sklar moved, seconded by Calhoun, the adoption of the constitutional revisions, effectively immediately. The motion passed unanimously. (A copy of the revised constitution is attached.)

Bridges then distributed the recommended revised by-laws. After considerable discussion, Crocker moved adoption of the revised by-laws, as further revised by the council in committee of the whole, be adopted. Motion seconded by Cherny. The motion passed unanimously. (A copy of the revised by-laws are attached.)

President Daniels announced that the SHGAPE article prize will be announced and awarded during the SHGAPE luncheon at the OAH, and subsequent prizes will be so announced and awarded. Lindenmeyer requested that the President appoint a Newsletter committee to assist her in obtaining news and soliciting other items of interest for the Newsletter, including the incorporation of discussions of significant trends in the field. President-elect Sklar will appoint the new committee.

Cherny introduced Richard Jensen of the University of Illinois at Chicago to discuss H-Net, an "electronic communications" network for historians. After discussion, President Daniels appointed Cherny chairman of a committee to explore SHGAPE's entry into H-Net as a separate H-Net discussion group and how best to implement it. Cherny is to report at the SHGAPE Council meeting in April 1994. (By consensus, it was agreed that SHGAPE had authorized de facto SHGAPE's entry if the committee could work out the appropriate arrangements).

President Daniels adjourned the Council meeting at 6:00 p.m. so that all could attend the SHGAPE reception. Retiring President Daniels announced that the next meeting of the Council will be held during the 1994 OAH meeting and will be called to order by new president Kathryn Kish Sklar.

Respectfully Submitted,

Roger D. Bridges
