SHGAPE Council Minutes
December 28, 1991

President Leslie H. Fishel, Jr., called the Council of the Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era to order at 5:00 p.m., on December 28, 1991. The Council met in Conference Room 5D, Hilton Hotel,Chicago. The following, in addition to President Fishel, were present: Charles Calhoun, Roger Daniels, Stacy Rozek, Gregory Gordon, Udo Sautter, Brian Adkins, Kriste Lindenmeyer, Robert Cherny, and Roger Bridges.

The Council accepted the agenda as presented by the President. Roger Daniels moved the acceptance of the April 12, 1991, Minutes. Udo Sautter seconded; motion carried.

The Secretary-Treasurer reported that there was a balance in the Treasury of $2263.53. He noted there were no outstanding bills, save those to be paid in connection with the current meeting.

Upon the call of President Fishel, Bridges announced the results of the election as follows:

President: Charles W. Calhoun (26)

Vice President: Roger Daniels (25)

Council: Ruth Crocker (24)

Harold D. Langley (27)

Stacy Rozek (Grad Student Rep.) (25)

He reported that membership remained steady. The council then discussed how membership could be encouraged. Recommendations included the following:

announcements in major national and regional journals

membership table at the AHA

screen articles that appear in journals and invite SHGAPE authors to join the organization

include printed announcements and membership form in newsletter

Upon further discussion, it was agreed that President Calhoun should appoint a membership committee and charge it with encouraging membership.

President Calhoun appointed Lewis Gould chairman of the Prize Committee. Other members will be added later.

In a discussion of the relationship of the Hayes Historical Journal and SHGAPE, Bridges reported that the Presidential Center would continue the special rate for SHGAPE members. He said, also, that the HPC Trustees had indicated their willingness to consider a name change when asked. Bridges reported, also, that the Journal would consider adding a book review section (in addition to the book review essay) if a SHGAPE member would be responsible for securing books, reviewers, and editing the reviews. The HHJ editor would do final content and copy editing. He also said that the Journal would be pleased to allocate a slot on the board of editors to a SHGAPE member.

Upon the recommendation of Roger Daniels, the Council named Kriste Lindenmeyer, Tennessee Tech University, editor of the Newsletter. All news should be sent to her. Fishel moved, seconded by Cherny, that the Newsletter Editor should be an ex officio member of the council. Motion carried.

By acclamation, Leslie H. Fishel received the thanks of the Council for his selfless service as President of SHGAPE. SHGAPE gratefully acknowledges his guidance and leadership in bringing about the organization.

President Calhoun adjourned the Council meeting at 6:00 p.m. to attend the SHGAPE reception. The next meeting of the Council will held during the Chicago OAH meeting at the Palmer House Hilton in April 1992.

Respectfully Submitted,

Roger D. Bridges
Secretary-Treasurer
