                            ANNOUNCEMENT

Version 5.0 of the Bonn Archaeological Statistics package for Microsoft Windows (WinBASP) is now available. It is a completely new set of programs, with many new features and modifications not previously available under DOS.

The Bonn Archeological Statistics Package (BASP) is a non-commercial, non-profit software project for and by archeologists which has been developed cooperatively since 1973. It now includes more than 60 functions for seriation, clustering, correspondance analysis, and other tools for archeologists working with IBM compatible PC's under DOS and Windows.

The new handbook for the Windows version has been completely revised and is now 'on-line' in Windows Help format so that you can print as many copies as you wish with all the illustrations. There is a vast bibliography covering all the subjects in the package, as well as theoretical introductions for non-mathematically inclined users in addition to detailed program descriptions and colored screen pictures.

A fully featured time-limited trial version is available via FTP. You will need an ftp receiving address where the programs (4 MB compressed) can be stored. The programs can be downloaded as follows:

Version 4.5, Basp for DOS, is available free from most SimTel mirror servers via FTP (SimTel/msdos/statstic/basp4dos.zip). It must be decompressed and installed with Pkunzip version 2.04g or later, also available from SimTel/msdos/zip/pkz204g.exe. It is about 2Mb in size.

The trial version is only available via ftp. Write me an e-mail for details on how to obtain 'snail mail' copies of the packages on diskettes if you can't download. For permanent installation, see the file order.txt on the first diskette image of basp5win.zip for details.

Hardware and Software Requirements

IBM compatible PC running Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later. The full package needs about 6 MB of hard disk space. A coprocessor or 486DX increases speed by a factor of 5, a Pentium by 10 or more.

Capacity and Speed

All programs use dynamic storage with variable matrix size. Large numbers of types and features/graves can be entered limited only by virtual memory.

CA: 19473 features with 279 types and 107680 incidences: Two components were computed in 305 seconds on a 486/66 machine. Seriation in roughly half that time. The amount of data which can be handled is many times that which can be treated in the DOS version.

The User Interface

Basp for Windows has a consistent user interface using standard Windows menus, dialog boxes, toolbars and toolboxes. Each has its own help which can be called at any time. Thus learning to use the programs is intuitive fo all those with any experience with other Windows programs. The programs are all new, with enhanced functions and many additions to those available in the DOS package.

Operating systems:

The programs have been tested under: Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows NT Workstation 3.5 and OS/2/2.1 Win/OS2 and have been installed under Novell 3.12 on a server, as well as on an OS/2 PC-LAN server.

The Macintosh and others:

Unfortunately, the Macintosh, Atari and Amiga markets are far too small to merit the enormous task of porting the BASP to a non-IBM compatible system. There is no economic justification for this, since the number of possible orders would not be likely even to pay for a machine needed for development and testing, not to mention the programming personnel costs.

Therefore, I can support only the IBM compatible market because this has sufficient mass. If you need the functions which the package offers, may I suggest that you ask your Macintosh dealer about one of the programs which enables a Macintosh to run Windows programs. Although this solution will not offer all of the user-friendly features of a true Macintosh program, it may permit you to run the package as such. Newer Macintoshes using a Power-PC chip and a Windows emulator may be able to run the programs directly, but this has not been tested.
