sae book prize             
The 2011 Douglass Prize has been awarded to Kristen Ghodsee (Bowdoin College), for her book, Muslim Lives in Eastern Europe: Gender, Ethnicity, and the Transformation of Islam in Postsocialist Bulgaria (Princeton University Press, 2010). Caroline Brettell and Susan Carol Rogers served on the committee chaired by Jeffrey Cole.
The 2010 Douglass Book Prize was awarded to Didier Fassin and Richard Rechtman, for their book, The Empire of Trauma: An Inquiry into the Condition of Victimhood, translated by Rachel Gomme and published by Princeton University Press. Peter Allen and Bill Kelleher served on the award committee chaired by Deborah Reed-Danahay
In 2010, Honorable Mention is given to Karin Sanders for her book, Bodies in the Bog and the Archaeological Imagination, published by Chicago University Press.
The 2009 Prize was awarded to Ruth Mandel for her ethnography Cosmopolitan Anxieties: Turkish Challenges to Citizenship and Belonging in Germany, published in 2008 by Duke University Press.

this year’s competition featureS an exciting format to foster mentorships between graduate students and senior sae members.

The recipient of the 2011 SAE Graduate Paper Competition is Naor Ben-Yehoyada (Harvard), with a paper entitled: "Segmentation across Borders: Contested Casting between Sicilians and Tunisians.” 


pre-dissertation fellowships                        

The recipient of the 2011 SAE/CES Pre-dissertation Fellowship is Tyler Boersen, a PhD student at the New School for Social Research. His project is entitled Visible Labor: The Making of a Precarious Workers Movement in Greece. 
Neringa Klumbyte and Othon Alexandrakis served on the committee chaired by Jeffrey Cole.
The deadline for this year's competition is February 1, 2012
