At the University of Minnesota we are currently engaged in two projects that might be helpful. The first is computerizing the 1920 census and the second is making all the censuses between 1850 and 1990 comparable (putting them all into the same format with the same variables). The person to contact is Steven Ruggles, ruggles@atlas.socsci.umn.edu. We provide extracts to anyone who wants them via an anonymous ftp site.

John Hannum was curious about the coverage of birth registration in Hill County Texas. In "Ancestry's Red Book: American State, County & Town Sources" edited by Alice Eicholz (2nd edit., Ancestry, 1992) p. 723 we note that mandatory birth registration began in 1903. Generally after 20 years registration gets to be a habit in a community. I am not sure about how to test out the rate of registration in the 1930s, but I suspect that by matching census data from 1910 and 1920 with existing birth registration records one might get an idea of the coverage in an earlier period. In England there have been studies of civil registration and census data that have been rather interesting.

I've been compiling data from the 1900 and 1910 manuscript censuses on the age at marriage, number of children, and number of living children for farmers' wives in Central Texas. I was all ready to start on the 1920 census last night and discovered that this information is not on the main schedule! Is there another place that I should look? Or are the librarian and I just missing something?

Rebecca Sharpless and others using the US 1920 manuscript census looking for information on how long a couple has been married and how many children were born to them will not find it, as it was not requested in 1920. I suppose that you are left with some serious research in the Texas State Library going through county marriage and birth records. May I suggest you consult, Texas County Records: A Guide to the Holdings of the Local Records Division of the Texas State Library by Michael Heskett Austin: Texas State Library, 1990 (2nd ed.)
I haven't seen it, but I suspect it may help you in your family reconstitution of those central Texas women.

From a recent personal experience, I would suspect some reliability problems. A colleague here (born in Abbot, TX in 1931) is going to Russia next year. His birth was never registered, and getting a birth certificate has taken him forever. I would wonder what percentage of those born in that part of TX were never registered.
