Low Cost Microfilm Readers

Steve Buss recently inquired about information on low cost microfilm readers. The History Documentation, Research, and Computing Center in the Dept. of History, SUNY-Albany (which I manage), operates on a shoestring budget. In spite of that, we've been able to acquire dozens of film and fiche readers (and several microfilm cameras) by going to business equipment auctions and by purchasing reconditioned units through a number of national vendors. At auctions, we have paid anywhere from $1 to $25 for Canon, Dukane, Xerox, and Northwest Microfilm equipment. As industries upgrade micrographic equipment to state-of-the art, computer-controlled machines, they have been dumping their old equipment for next-to-nothing. That's great news for outfits like ours and for individual historians. But you can't predict auctions and you can't control their timing. So, here are a few national vendors that organizations and individuals might want to contact:

ALL MICROGRAPHICS, 4303 Piney Park Rd., Perry Hall, MD 21128
(Call Dick Svehla at 410-256-1982/FAX 410-256-1984)
ALTECK SYSTEMS (Contact Jim Harvey, 1-800-627-1123)
ALPHA SOURCE 1-800-654-9845

If you have any more questions about access to inexpensive micrographic equipment, contact me at the e-mail address below. Good luck to all!
